How Can I Help Prevent Child Abuse Before it Happens

What Should I Do if I Notice an Indicator?

Follow the flow chart below to guide your response
when you notice one or more indicators:

You find out the indicator is not caused by child abuse or neglect.

If the family needs primary prevention, you can use materials to counsel parents and provide referrals to services that will help the parents or guardians.

You find information to form a reasonable suspicion that the indicator is the result of abuse or neglect.

You call the Child Abuse Hotline to report your suspicion.

You don't get enough information about the indicator to form a reasonable suspicion, but you still feel concerned or worried about the child.

You call the Child Protective Services (CPS) for a consultation.
