Where Can I Find More Information About Child Advocacy Groups?

There are many organizations with web sites that focus on the prevention of child abuse and neglect as well as the reporting of cases in which abuse and neglect have occurred. The following lists some of the major organizations, their mission, and website address.

Description: NCCAN was established by the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act of 1974 (P.L. 93-247) and is an agency within the Administration on Children, Youth, and Families. NCCAN?s major activities include three State grant programs (Basic State Grants, Children?s Justice Act Grants, and Community-based Family Resource and Support Grants), funding for research, service improvement programs, and demonstration projects. These projects include the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS), the National Incidence Study (NIS), the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information, and the National Resource Center for Child Maltreatment.

The Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) was signed into law in 1995. This law requires sex offenders to register with the State and provides information to the public about certain sex offenders living in their communities. This web site provides a 900 number to access the sex offender registry in NYS and will link to similar registries in other states.
